Mesoporous Materials

Mesoporous silica/titania/carbon is nanoporous material having pore ranging from 2 to 15 nm with large surface area up to 1300 m2. In many of the potential applications for mesoporous materials especially as molecular host, ordered morphology and pore structure could be accounted as a key factor for enhancing the applicability. In addition, mesoporous materials is also having other key points such as: 1) Tailor able structure; 2) Controllable surface properties of the wall. The surface of the wall can be tuned to be hydrophobic, hydrophilic or even have ionic charge; 3) Adjustable length of the channels. Fig. 1 shows the example of highly ordered mesoporous silica.

To satisfy our need for photonics and bio applications we are developing mesoporous silica in two form: mesoporous silica nanoparticles and thin film mesoporous silica.
Luminescence Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles
For bio imaging and drug delivery applications, size is a matter. Using modified procedure to synthesize mesoporous silica, we are able to incorporated wide range of luminescence materials including metal complexes and organic dye at specific position of silica nano particles with controllable size. We successfully synthesize (luminescence) mesoporous silica with size down up to 25 nm with very narrow size distribution. Various applications of this type material are currently under exploration.
Thin film mesoporous materials
Emerging applications of thin-layered film motivated us to develop thin film hybrid mesoporous materials. Currently we are exploring the application of this type of material in bio and photonics area.
